Wednesday's at the Square

At LaFayette Sqaure downtown the New Orleans Saints host an outdoor music event every Wednesday that’s free and has food booths, an art walk, and beer garden. I guess restaurants rent a space and people buy tickets from the organizers to get food/drink instead of the vendors so most of the proceeds go to a youth charity. This week Trombone Shorty was playing and I was really excited because I had seen them at the Portland Blues Festival last year and they put on a great show. I knew that they were from New Orleans so I looked them up when I got here to see if they were playing any shows and this is the only show they are playing while I’m here so I’m glad I got to go. Trombone Shorty is a native New Orleanian who grew up in the 6th Ward and has played internationally. They are described at contemporary jazz – he has a full bands with guitars, saxophones, drums, bongos, bass, etc. They put on an awesome show. I always think that it is really cool to see a native play in their hometown because they get so much support from the audience and I think that is especially true here. For their encore, they did a march through the crowd. It was just a great evening all around, I’m really looking forward to lots of good music.

  1. I didn't even think about the fact that you'd be spending summer in a city that is all about your favorite musical genre. Lucky, Lucky. Good pictures!
