Hurricane Season - Day One

Today, June 1, 2009 is day one of hurricane season. We haven’t had any more rain since the first couple of days we were here. It is a big deal here, because it actually makes a difference in the daily life here whereas in Portland it just passes like any other day. People have been talking about this for days. And in that same vein, it is really eye opening to how much Katrina is part of people’s lives and everyday vocabulary. You can’t talk to anyone without them referencing Katrina in someway, and when people say they are from New Orleans the immediate follow up question is, “Pre-Katrina or Post Katrina?” It is almost like when someone talks about their ex all the time and everyone knows that that person isn’t over their ex yet. New Orleans isn’t over Katrina yet. I think that is telling to how much recovery is still left to do and how much help is still needed four years later. I am looking forward to some thunder storms though, nothing serious just something to rattle the windows a bit.
